Why Results Vary
Actual outcomes can differ from an estimate because of:
- Room and surfaces: wall, ceiling, and floor reflectance, room shape, and obstructions change how much light reaches a surface.
- Fixtures and losses: luminaire efficiency, light-loss and maintenance factors, mounting height, spacing, and beam angle all reduce real-world illuminance below the ideal figure.
- Product variation:a lamp’s rated lumens, efficacy, colour temperature, and colour rendering vary by brand, batch, and age.
- Your inputs: the wattages, dimensions, distances, prices, and hours you enter, along with units and rounding, all change the result.
A Note on Lumens, Lux, and Candela
These quantities describe different things and are easy to confuse. Lumens measure total light output; lux measures how much of that light lands on a surface (lumens per square metre); and candela measures luminous intensity in a particular direction. Converting between them relies on assumptions — a beam angle, a distance, an area, a uniform distribution — that rarely hold exactly in a real space. Treat a converted figure as a guide, not a measurement, and use a calibrated light meter when an accurate value matters.
